Charitable acts, also known as almsgiving, are of central importance in many major religions. This reflects the significance of compassion, empathy, and helping those in need. The Atharva Veda states Satha hastha samahara sahasra hastha samkira,” which means to earn as if you have a hundred hands but donate as if you have a thousand hands. Charity is based on the Hebrew Bible and Jesus’ parables, which emphasize the significance of showing mercy and obeying God’s law.

In the Islamic tradition, almsgiving is one of the Five Pillars, while Buddhists practice giving alms, food, medicine, and clothing to monks and monasteries in exchange for teachings and merit. Sikhism, founded by Guru Nanak in the early sixteenth century, has an interesting perspective on charitable giving, stating that a person’s salvation depends on charitable acts.

The Sreesha Charitable Trust, established in Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), emerged from a decade-long commitment to helping the disadvantaged. Its inception was inspired by a group of like-minded individuals who perceive charity as a divine calling.

Despite Kerala’s advancements in education and healthcare, the region still struggles with a significant homeless population, which has been further worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The trust recognises the enduring impact of an imbalanced social system, which has left many lives in disarray, necessitating long-term recovery efforts. The trust’s focus is on helping those who have been overlooked by government aid or established charitable organisations.
